More than one hundred suspected militants were put under house arrest as part of security steps taken since 12 members of the presidential guards were killed in a suicide attack earlier this week. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of security in Tunisia, said that the 138 included 44 members of the now-outlawed Ansar al-Sharia and two hardline Islamist militants, who have recently returned home from "hotspots," a reference to Syria, Iraq and Libya. The arrests took place in Tunis, Gafsa, Kairouan, Bizerte, Cap Bon, Medenine and Sousse, where a militant cell named al-Furqan (The Criterion) Battalion was dismantled. |
