On 5 May 2016, Egyptian security forces arrested the lawyer in Cairos Maadi district and brought him to Shubra al-Kheima police station in northern Cairo. On May 7, his lawyers filed a complaint to several authorities, including the head judge of the Supreme Judicial Council, the prosecutor-general, the Lawyers Syndicate, and the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR). Two militant groups, including the Islamic State's affiliate inEgypt and 'Popular Resistance', claimed responsibility for anattackthat killed eight policemen in the early hours of 8 May in Helwan in Greater Cairo. According to a statement by the interior ministry, four unidentified assailants with automatic weapons stopped a police vehicle carrying eight policemen dressed in civilian clothes. The policemen were inspecting the security situation in a Helwan district. The Islamic State's affiliate in Egypt claimed responsibility for the attack and said that it comes as part of a series of attacks "in retaliation" for women's imprisonment in Egyptian jails. It was not possible to verify the statements, though most media reported the attack as being carried out by the Islamic State affilate group. According to a resident in the Daily News Egypt, the attack was carried out by members of the Arab Abu Maseid tribe, using a machine gun fixed on a truck. |
