Reports indicate that the gunmen were from the same clan of the minister (Majerteen/Osman Mohamud) and took the car to Guud Cad village 30km NE of Qardho town. The gunmen reportedly stole the vehicle in protest against the minister for not helping his clansmen in terms of employment and development opportunities. Reports further indicate that talks are ongoing between clan elders and the gunmen on the matter.

Ethiopian soldiers fired back and killed the two attackers.
