23 people died during ethnic clashes that erupted between youth groups in the regions of Guerrara and M'zab Valley (Ghardaia, 600 km south of Algiers) between Tuesday and Wednesday. The heaviest toll was recorded in Guerrara with 19 dead, due to projectiles thrown by unknown people. These clashes were marked by fire and acts of vandalism against houses, business premises, private vehicles and palm groves, street furniture and public buildings. An increasing number of security forces were deployed on the ground, supported by the anti-riot forces of the National Gendarmerie to put an end to these clashes which continued on Wednesday. |
