Burundian soldiers clashed with armed gangs in the west of the country in two separate incidents that resulted in the death of a civilian, officials said Wednesday. Soldiers acting on a tip-off ambushed a group of armed men in the western Rugazi region late Tuesday, sparking an hour-long firefight that forced the gang to retreat to a nearby forest, said Gaspard Baratuza, the army spokesman. He said a civilian was killed by mistake when a soldiers who laid an ambush at night fired at people they thought were bandits. |
