Police used teargas and a baton charge to break up a demonstration that marred the introduction of Islamic law. The demonstration had been staged by Muslim traditional beggars (Almajiris) angry that the state governor and emir had failed to hold a ceremony for the occasion. Police reported using tear gas to break up the demonstration after some protesters set fire to part of the square in which they were demonstrating. Elsewhere in the city, angry crowds torched several office buildings, including a local chamber of commerce. |
