Troops enforced a curfew in parts of northern Nigeria on Sunday after protests over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed triggered riots in two cities that left 26 people dead and 11 churches burned. In Katsina, police opened fire into a crowd of stone-throwers, killing one and injuring others. Churches were also burned in Katsina, he added, but it was not known how many. An earlier toll had put the number of dead in Saturday's violence in the two northern cities of Maiduguri and Katsina at 16. |
