Rioting by CPC supporters hit parts of Nigeria's north overnight as President Goodluck Jonathan headed for a first-round victory in the country's elections. Allegations of vote rigging led to street riots in parts of the states of Kaduna, where residents said the homes of ruling party figures had been attacked and gunshots were heard. In addition, the homes of supporters were also attacked by the mobs - youths armed with clubs and machetes were targeting people who did not look like they were indigenous to the north (those in the country's north typically support Buhuri, the challenger). Police and military later clashed with the rioters, dispersing many with tear gas and live ammonisation. Causalities not known. |
