More than 20 trucks closed the main roads in front of local council offices in Burao in the morning of 13/05. The drivers were protesting against the decision by a local council banning them from harvesting sand from the dry river in Burao. Police fired tear gas and live ammunition into the air to disperse the protesters, one reported killed by a stray bullet accidentally fired into the crowd. The group responded to the police pushback by burning tires, blocking roads and destroying vehicles. Police and soldiers were deployed to the area in response. This was the second day of the protest. |
