Over the course of 36 hours (night of Oct.30 to morning of Nov.1), Sudanese troops carried out house-to-house searches of Tabit either to look for a soldier they believed had been abducted or because they had been given information about rebel supporters in the town. During these searches they separated the men of the village from the women and children. They beat, some severely, and humiliated the men and raped many women and girls, at least 200 in total, while also looting property. A Sudanese army commander admitted his troops engaged in the abuses, and human rights watch released a report detailing the incident. Some residents of the town also participated in the abuses alongside the soldiers. |
