A SVBIED (minibus) that was parked in front of Baidoa Hotel exploded near Dahabshiil office in Baidoa in the evening of 28/02 where locals assemble in the afternoon causing high number of casualties. A few seconds later a suicide bomber (assumed to be a female) entered a very popular Beder Restaurant and exploded her suicide vest. The restaurant is frequented by traditional elders, politicians, diasporas for sharing ideas and information during evening tea time. A large number of security forces were deployed in the town, curfew was imposed for the night and movement of vehicles and people was restricted. Reports from medical source indicate that 37 people died in the two attacks including a medical doctor working for Bihow hospital while over 50 people were injured, some of them with serious injuries. Victims with serious injuries are expected to be air lifted to Mogadishu for specialized treatment. Al Shabaab has claimed the responsibility of the two attacks. Other sources hold 55 dead. |
