Uganda's main opposition leader has been charged with treason and jailed in a remote area in the country's northeast, a judiciary spokesman said Saturday. Kizza Besigye was handed charges late Friday stemming from his public attacks on the legitimacy of President Yoweri Museveni. He was arrested on Wednesday in the capital Kampala. During the same week police arrested opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party Secretary for mobilisation at Gayaza Trading Centre in Kampala over her alleged involvement in a number of crimes. She was released two days later. Police also put the home of opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader in Parliament under siege in Kampala, Najanankumbi and Kira municipality ahead of the swearing in of President Museveni. |
