Residents of Beled Weyne staged a violent demonstration on 11/05 in protest against depreciation of Somali shilling against the dollar. The current rate reached SoSh 30,000 per $1 compared to the previous rate of 22,000. The protestors destroyed small stands used for money exchange and burnt tyres. The current tensions arose after new Somali notes, allegedly printed in Puntland, flooded the market. The local authorities stepped in and announced fixed new rates: buying rate SoSh 23,600 per $1 and selling rate SoSh23, 400 per $1. This move seems to have quelled the protests. |
